Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is officially out and it tells the terrifying true story surrounding serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Yesterday (Sep 21), Dahmer debuted on Netflix and people are calling it one of the most disturbing true crime dramas ever. The show stars Evan Peters as Dahmer and it’s told from the perspective of his victims. Dahmer targeted predominantly Black gay men and for years, his crimes, which included cannibalism and necrophilia, were ignored by the police.

How accurate is The Jeffrey Dahmer Story though, where is Jeffrey Dahmer now and how are people reacting to the show?

For the most part, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is a true-to-life telling of Jeffrey Dahmer’s actual crimes and the effect that they had on his victims and their families. As shown in the show, Dahmer was eventually found guilty of 16 murders. He also did confess to having sex with their dead bodies, dismembering them and, in some cases, eating parts of them.

As portrayed in episode 1, Tracy Edwards did escape Dahmer and it was only then that Dahmer was arrested. Just like the show suggests, police found disturbing polaroids in Dahmer’s bedroom and, following a more extensive search after his arrest, found skulls in his closet and severed heads and human body parts stored in his kitchen fridge/freezer.

When he was arrested, Dahmer did say: “For what I did I should be dead.” He then confessed to all of his crimes in police interrogations without asking for a lawyer. In a 1992 trial, Dahmer was found legally sane and he was sentenced to 16 terms of life imprisonment, which was a total of 941 years in prison.

In 1994, he was beaten to death by, Christopher Scarver, a fellow inmate.

Reacting to the series, viewers have been equal parts horrified and impressed with how well the true-crime drama is acted.

YouTuber Hutch tweeted: “This Dahmer limited series on Netflix is one of the most disturbing things I have ever watched and I feel like I have a pretty high threshold. Not sure I’m gonna be able to finish it. It is genuinely horrifying.” Another wrote: “This Jeffrey Dahmer Netflix show is so fucking disturbing. He was a sick ass evil person.”

Meanwhile, one viewer tweeted: “The first episode of “Dahmer” was horrifying… genuinely not sure if I can carry on…” and someone else wrote: “Evan Peters playing Jeffrey Dahmer is actually terrifying because how can he be so convincing.”

Three episodes in and Dahmer is TERRIFYING man. Evan Peters and Ryan Murphy did an excellent job I thought I was well versed on the case but it exposed so much more

This Jeffrey Dahmer series on Netflix is doubling as a trauma series for the Black community & especially the Black queer community. I like the truth to be told…But realize this isn’t just about Dahmer. This is about how a Black community was targeted, attacked, & ignored.
