The United States takes a commanding 4-1 lead into Day 2 of the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Golf Club. The U.S. looked right at home in Charlotte, and the Americans appear primed to win their 12th Presidents Cup if all goes according to plan. Adding to their dominance in foursomes on Thursday, they now shift their attention to four-ball where the U.S. side has drawn square with the International team since 2007.

The Internationals squad is sending out Adam Scott first, once again, despite the eldest member of the away team struggling mightily alongside Hideki Matsuyama on Day 1. He will be paired with his fellow Australian Cameron Davis as the pair aims to take down the American duo of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. In total, five four-ball matches will be contested as Trevor Immelman’s squad attempts to claw its way back into contention.

Despite all the naysayers, falling behind by three points early in the competition is not insurmountable for an away team as showcased by the U.S. in 2019 at Royal Melbourne. In Australia, the U.S. lost the first session at the exact same 4-1 score ย only to raise the Presidents Cup by week’s end with a 16-14 victory. While the likelihood of the International team replicating this feat is faint, it remains a possibility heading into the second day of event.

After trading birdies on the difficult 14th, the two teams did so again on the 15th. First it was Sungjae Im from 30 feet and then Sam Burns from 25 feet as the U.S. hold a 1 UP lead. The internationals must flip this match and win two of the final three matches if they are to have a pulse heading into the weekend.

The South Korean converted an unlikely birdie while the world No. 1 took the more conventional route on the par-3 14th. The internationals are 1 DN at this point and will need to scratch out 0.5 points in some manner. There are three matches still realistically up for grabs and this one will need to go black and yellow.

The International team needs to flip two matches late to make this interesting. Sebastian Munoz and Sungjae Im are going after Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns with four holes left, and Trevor Immelman’s squad needs that one as well as Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith against Billy Horschel and Max Homa in the last match.

After falling 3 DN through eight, the Australians have marched back to 2 DN through 13 holes. Scott and Davis made birdies on Nos. 9-12 and are finally beginning to find their stride. Unfortunately, Thomas and Spieth are 7 under on their ball and about to be 8 under as JT just hit his approach on the par-3 14th to a foot.

A pair of rookies are putting the internationals on their back. Mito Pereira and Christiaan Bezuidenhout are 1 UP through 10 after a Pereira birdie on the par-3 10th. They are the only pair of internationals to be leading their match while three find themselves 2 DN and the last 5 DN as Cantlay and Schauffele continue to show no mercy.

For the first time this week, Burns is getting after it and has made an eagle and two birdies in his last four holes to start to put Sungjae Im and Sebastian Munoz away.

Cantlay and Schauffele are 5-up through 8. Shortest match in Presidents Cup history is 12 holes (happened twice).
